A woman has been conned out of $4,000 (£2,400) by scammers who hacked into a Facebook page belonging to one of her friends.
Jayne Scherrman lost the money after her friend Grace Parry had her log-in details stolen. Parry's friends started receiving messages saying that she and her husband had been robbed in London and needed funds to get home.
Scherrman received several of the messages, as well as a call from a man with a British accent claiming to be an immigration official.
"He said the woman and her husband were being detained and that more money was needed to fly them home," police spokesman Jason Selzer told the Press Association. "She sent three different wire transfers to London."
Scherrman sent the money to help out her friend, while Parry was trying to get the word out that she had been hacked, but was locked out of her account.
"The sad truth is that people are far too trusting of messages they receive via social networks," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant with Sophos.
"Just because it appears to come from a friend doesn't mean that it's a friend who typed and sent it. It's perfectly possible that your online friends have had their account passwords stolen and have lost control of their Facebook profiles."
MUMBAI: A Teacher’s Day surprise for the staff at Prime Academy at Marol Maroshi was being in the august company of former New Zealand cricket skipper and ex-India coach John Wright.
They met him posed for pics with him while the students got gyaan from the likeable Kiwi.
Thanks to the efforts of Karl Dantas a Mumbai friend of Wright the cricketer was invited to give a talk by the school chairman Naresh Advani. Dantas told the students how John loved two children having two of his own, 18-year-old Harry who is a left-arm spinner playing at u-19 level and 15-year-old daughter Georgie who is a dancer and ballet artiste and likes the Hip Hope dance.
Wright said, "I had been told about your school project by Karl when I used to visit Mumbai during my days as India coach. I am glad to see this magnificent school come up."
About his stint as coach, Wright said," I was lucky to work with your talented Indian players." He then asked the students, "Who is your favourite cricketer?" The answers kept coming, Dhoni, Sachin, Yuvraj, Kapil Dev, Gambhir, Dravid. Wright was sad the name of Sunil Gavaskar did not come up. "Gavaskar was the best Indian cricketer for me. You could have also added names of Bhajji (Harbhajan, Laxman)."
Going back to his youth, Wright said, "When they were your age they must have had a dream. But they wouldn't have know that they would be privileged to play for India. I too went to school but not as big as yours of 600-plus students. There were just 26 students in my school and just six in my class. You see I lived on a farm as big as 500 acres. I didn't watch any cricket. But when I was your age I had a dream, to play for the country. Encourage that dream. God has given you something you are good at, maybe science, chemistry, cricket. Follow this with passion, work hard and you never know what can happen. My greatest experience in life was to coach. I would be happy to come three times a year to coach you given the chance."
Wright had praise for the young kids who performed a Rajasthani dance. "Your dances are superb, Indians dance really well."
School chairman Naresh Advani told Wright that school, in its fourth year had 100 per cent success rate and had facilities for sports like basketball, martial arts, skating and cricket. The Korean, Taiwanese and South Africans students said they had not seen a lab like what Prime Academy had in their own countries. New Delhi, July 27 (IANS) The Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group has tied up finances for its 300 MW power plant at Butibori in Mahrashtra and expects the project to be operational by 2011-12, it said in a statement Monday.
Announcing the financial closure with Axis Bank as the lead institution, the group said that the project would meet the power requirements of Butibori, Hingna and other industrial areas in Maharashtra.
'The project involves setting up of its own transmission and distribution network in the nearby industrial areas, thereby ensuring supply of uninterrupted and quality power,' the statement said.
The coal for the project will be sourced from Western Coalfields Ltd, it added.

New Delhi, July 27 (PTI) State-run power utility NTPC today said its net profit soared by 27 per cent in the first quater of this fiscal to Rs 2,193 crore, helped by better electricity generation and sales. "The company''s net electricity generation and volume of sales went up by 11 per cent which helped to register a growth of 27 in net profit during April-June this fiscal compared to same quater in 2008-09", NTPC Chariman and Managing Director R S Sharma told reporters after the company''s board of directors meeting.
"Out of this 11 per cent growth (generatiaon and sales) 6.68 per cent came from new power generation capacities of 2000 MW added between July 2008 and June 30 2009 and the remaining 4.32 per cent of this from higher efficiency level during April-June quarter this fiscal", Sharma said. About the plant load factor (PLF), he said, "During April-June period this fiscal the cumulative PLF of coal fired power plans was marginally up at 92.87 per cent compared to 92.17 per cent in the same period in 2008-09.
" However, the PFL of gas based power plants see sizeable imporovement at 79.87 per cent during April to June this fiscal compared to 67.2 per cent in the same quarter in 2008-09, he added. .
